SUNSET

The Day has fought, but Night has won,

Darkness creeps behind a dozing sun,

The Sky is disrobed of her amber dress,

Sunset shall heal the Moon of blindness.

WHAT IS THE SIZE OF LOVE? (A short story)

Everyone in Alao's family opposed him, when he decided he wanted to marry Asabi.
They all felt they were a great mismatch. And yes, they did voice their reservations even to her hearing. Asabi would break down in tears, because she loved Alao so much and could not stand any opposition to their being together for a lifetime.
Alao was a wealthy farmer. He had a barrel chest, muscular arms and sturdy legs…the hall mark of masculinity in those days. The darling of the village maidens, who drooled whenever they discussed about him as they fetched water from the stream. They would roll their eyes when they described this god of a man. And on rare occasions when he walked by, their gait would change from an ordinary catwalk to a swinging sashay. They would sway their hips, making their nubile buttocks dance to the “krim…krim” music of their waist beads.
But Alao never took notice of their advances…he only adored Asabi.
Now, Asabi was not a tall woman, neither did she have a rotund backside. Her breasts were small like unripe agbalumo…the reason why everyone thought she had charmed Alao…maybe with the only pretty thing she had- a small pouty mouth that housed a sexy gap tooth.
Against everyone’s protest, Alao married his sweetheart, Asabi. Their love was a tender flower that lived among thorns. Alao, determined to make his wife happy decided to leave the village for good.
And so, as it happens with a man mad in love, he sold all he had, tied all the money in a huge pouch, grabbed Asabi by her tiny waist and embarked on a journey to a new life…a new land where there would be no judgemental eyes to make mockery of their love.
Alao and Asabi set out at dawn. By dusk, they were just a few thousand yards to their destination.
My readers, as you all know the forces of evil detest sweet love stories. So they came together and possessed a gang of young men, who manifested as robbers.
They jumped onto the foot paths that the love birds were travelling upon. Brandishing their machetes, they ordered Alao to hand over the pouch containing all his life fortune.
Alao was shocked and fear gripped his heart like a newly released convict will squeeze a bolus of fufu. He began to shake in terror. His teeth clattered and his shoulders quivered. Then Asabi spoke with a loving voice,
“Yes, my husband, shake very well…I say shake very well. That is how you shook the last time that you killed forty men”.
Alao looked from Asabi to the sharp machetes in the robbers’ hands, and was more afraid. Oh! He shook some more. Asabi continued,
“O my great husband keep shaking…just like you shook and had a whole village for breakfast…just shake and destroy them…I say shake o…shake o!
Alao in his terror could not take his eyes away from the weapons of the young robbers, even though they were dismayed by Asabi’s praise chants of her shaking husband. As Alao imagined what a sharp machete could do to his neck, his almost bursting bladder gave way and he peed all over his Ankara trousers.
Asabi saw the huge wet patch on her husband’s trousers and raised her voice victoriously,
“Alao! My powerful husband. The brave one that uses the skulls of his enemies to drink pap. Now that you have urinated, they can’t escape death… o, how sweet their flesh will be”.
As the robbers heard Asabi’s last statement, they took to their heels and ran in different directions like rats in the presence of a wild cat.
Later that night, while both of them bathed in the cool waters of the stream with the moon smiling above their heads, Alao looked at Asabi. She shyly avoided his loving gaze. He gently buried his face in her tiny bosom, and managed a whisper.
“Asabi you are my strength”.
